Image
The main corporations that provide social media services   The main corporations that provide social media services are corporations such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, the list goes on and on but all of these social media corporations provide a similar service, each with their own unique features. There is a huge amount of social media sites accessible across the globe today, but the main 2 social media sites are Facebook, Twitter and Google+, so what is it exactly that makes these sites like many others popular? Facebook Facebook is the biggest social media site that currently exists with:- 1.28 billion daily active users on average for March 2017 1.94 billion monthly active users as of March 31, 2017 The reason for why Facebook is popular in my opinion is the fact that it's such an easy site to use both for the older and younger generation and there is a good mix of both currently on the site. Facebook provides many pop...

The use made of personal data by social media enterprises.

Image
It is said that social media collect all the information about their customers and they then sell it on to other companies so that they can see what their potential customers do online.  Entities such as airlines, politicians, and even non-profits use the social media to find out information on their customers and then they come up with ideas on how to target them.  Social media such as Instagram and Facebook also have the right to take any information off of your page. It states in the terms and conditions that either of these websites have the right to use your personal information but 9/10 people do not read these terms and conditions and click "I Accept" anyway therefore don't know the dangers of them using these social media websites. This can include things such as photos, videos, updates, etc and they can use them for themselves or again sell them onto other companies to use. Instagram for example have the right to use users photos for advertising their ...

Current developments in social media

As social media progresses, more and more updates keep taking place, social media scientists keep trying to improve the sites everyday by adding new features. Adding new updates to the social media means that many people will carry on enjoying and using the sites, and the rest will just be happy to use the site as it has always been. The only issue with developing social media apps, is that other apps usually copy on to ideas. Over the years of social media, the bosses have been trying to make it as open as possible so people really interact with the world. The picture above was used as it relates to a building being developed just like all the social media sites developing currently. The Uses Made of Social Media by Individuals and Groups. On a personal level, Social Media to me is intrusive and a bit iffy, therefore I chose not tp use it anymore than I have to but; There are so many different uses of Social Media in the 21st Century.  Usage of the internet has more than doubled in the U.K. in the past 10 years. A report published from the National Office of Statistics states that there were 35% of adults (16.2 million) using the internet in 2006 compared to 82% of adults (41.8 million) users in 2016. 70% of adult usage in 2016 was used "on the go" (mobile)  compared to 36% in 2011 and now the smart TV is becoming more popular, according to a published article that in 2016,  21% of internet connections being activated through the television. ethical considerations of using social media

Image
The image i found hits the nail in the head... is social media helping or harming our social lives?? some people say its the ONLY way they can socialise... is this because social media has taken over our lives that much that the thought of actually going up to a person just to say hello makes you uncomfortable? or is it just down to the fact that we can talk to more than one person or have a group discussion without even putting a brush through our hair or even washing our face?... is social media help form another reason for folk to be lazy or does social media help people. to be honest peoples opinions on this vary from one person to the next..  IS THIS MERELY A DISTRACTION TO WHAT REALLY MATTERS?  DOES SOCIAL MEDIA CAUSE PEOPLE TO BE EVEN MORE UNSOCIAL??   I guess in the reality of things this is solely up to you. live your life the way you see fit but always consider the big picture. Are you missing out while stuck to your phone or table...

The societal implications of social media

Image
People are using social media too much that its changing society for good, people are becoming much less social and more interested in messaging online then meeting up with a loved one. Social media has got social in it but it's not very social as you aren't actually meeting the person, you’re just talking to them behind a screen. People are becoming more and more hidden away from situations that used to happen all the time like meeting up for a coffee with a group of mates. Bullying online is a very common factor now and many people get cyber bullied daily all due to social media. People are also losing their jobs due to sharing personal life on social media. Looking online I found out what the internet has to say about the social implications of social media and the following sentence I found, "Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to social networking. Many introverts and socially reclusive users place too much emphasis on virtual interaction, and ignore the rea...

examples of abuse of personal data by social media enterprises

Image
There has been much speculation and discussions surrounding how our data is used when connected to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. There is a lot of rumors going around so the purpose of this blog is to try and give some information about how data is used and by who to help inform you on what is true and what is false. Entities such as airlines, politicians and even non-profits can use your data for finding new customers or targeting products to existing ones. financial services companies such as banks and lenders are also using "data mining" services for marketing purposes and to make lending decisions, for example, certain types of credit products, which fit your personality, could be marketed especially to you. This is often overlooked by social media users as not everyone reads the small print so you never know how or in what way companies are collecting and  using our data which is quite unnerving especially if you do not want your data used. In r...

Privacy Within Social Media

Image
Problems with Privacy Social media has became such a big part of everyday life for people and businesses as it allows them to stay connected with others from around the globe but one thing people should be aware of is that anything that is posted will leave a footprint/trace online and people will be out there trying to invade your privacy for a different variety of reasons such as trying to steal your identity meaning that they may use your accounts for criminal activity. Protecting Privacy Privacy in social media has became important as you do not know who exactly going to view your information online so measures are going to have to be taken to try and stay as safe as possible as you are never going to be completely safe but there are ways to reduce the risks such as making sure that the privacy settings on the sites have been set up properly as social media sites like Facebook have had problems before with updating and privacy settings for accounts reset completel...

The Historical development of social media

Image
The Historical development of social media   Early Social Media Technology changed the ways in which we as a society communicate. After the first computers were created during the 1940s, scientists and engineers began to develop ways to create networks between those computers, and this would later lead to the birth of the Internet. By the 1970s, networking technology had vastly improved, and 1979’s "UseNet" allowed users to communicate through a virtual newsletter. By the 1980s, home computers were becoming more common and social media was becoming more sophisticated. The first recognizable social media site, "Six Degrees", was created in 1997, it enabled its users to create a profile and become friends with other users. The year 1999 lead to the popularity of blogging, something that is still hugely popular today among social media users. Social Media Today After the invention and popularity of blogging, social media began to expl...

The business models of social media enterprises

Image
Small businesses to global organisations, everybody is looking to benefit from  social media to increase their trade and promote their business. One of the main attractions of numerous social media sites is the fact that they are free, which is pretty astonishing seeing as   Facebook   alone has over 500 million users. As you can imagine, creating effective software that performs faultlessly on this scale is a demanding   task needing a full team of individuals. Since these social media sites are free, the clear question then becomes how do these corporations stay afloat, let alone turn a good yield?  Like many   new businesses, social media sites are often supported by a set of entrepreneurs that put down a good-sized investment with the belief that the business will produce large dividends in the future. For social media sites, this investment often comes from other ingrained   internet   sites, such as Google’ s multi -million doll...
