The societal implications of social media

Image result for social media affects People are using social media too much that its changing society for good, people are becoming much less social and more interested in messaging online then meeting up with a loved one. Social media has got social in it but it's not very social as you aren't actually meeting the person, you’re just talking to them behind a screen. People are becoming more and more hidden away from situations that used to happen all the time like meeting up for a coffee with a group of mates. Bullying online is a very common factor now and many people get cyber bullied daily all due to social media. People are also losing their jobs due to sharing personal life on social media.

Looking online I found out what the internet has to say about the social implications of social media and the following sentence I found, "Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to social networking. Many introverts and socially reclusive users place too much emphasis on virtual interaction, and ignore the real world outside." This statement is very true as many people that use social media have been getting too attached to it and have been losing connection with the actual world. More and more citizens barely leave the house as they feel they can live their lives indoors through social media.
To think back to when social media didn't exist and humans met up everyday to have a chat, it was such a more positive and happy place. Now people are too scared to go out and actually talk to someone, they feel so much safer being behind a keyboard tucked away in their room. As much fun as it is to be able to use your phone to interact with the world via social media, there needs to be a limit where people can realize how social media is taking over their lives a bit too much.

Kids are also being targeted by the negative affects of social media too, as it fills all their phones in the school hallways, its become one of the fastest trends that if you don't have a social media account, you get laughed at. Not to mention how much bullying takes place over social media, eg. through Facebook pictures to twitter statuses. And the drama doesn't always seem to finish over social media like it started, the tensions between people can go on and on especially at school for students.

There is also a lot of criminals online trying to steal peoples information through identity theft, my colleague wrote up an article which talks more in detail of this in hos post called "The dangers of social media to individuals and businesses".

Then there is also the cyber bullying that happens over social media, peoples confidence can be snatched away within seconds over looking at a hurtful comment someone else posted. If one person shares a video, it could end up going viral and the whole world will see, and sometimes the star of the video didn't even want this to happen whether its positive or negative.

The picture at the top of the page comments on all the words that link to social media, each word is known for something positive to come out of it, but also there are plenty negatives lurking within the words.

Even though social media is very popular across many people, the implications of the users of the electronic community seem to be taking over fast the members of the physical community which is making our world a whole less more lonely.

  2. Great blog detailing the effect of societal implications of social media as cyber-bullying is a massive problem that isn't going to just go away and since this is down over the internet than a lot more people are going to witness something like this because just about anybody can be contacted or get in touch with anybody.

Only thing would be is if there would be another couple of links as looking at information from multiple sources may help justify answers.

  5. Really enjoyed the amount of detail that went into this, really makes you think about how much you yourself use social media rather than going to social events and meeting up with friends.

I checked out the link you used and personally think more information could have been added but still a very good post.
