The Uses Made of Social Media by Individuals and Groups.
On a personal level, Social Media to me is intrusive and a bit iffy, therefore I chose not tp use it anymore than I have to but;
There are so many different uses of Social Media in the 21st Century. Usage of the internet has more than doubled in the U.K. in the past 10 years. A report published from the National Office of Statistics states that there were 35% of adults (16.2 million) using the internet in 2006 compared to 82% of adults (41.8 million) users in 2016.70% of adult usage in 2016 was used "on the go" (mobile) compared to 36% in 2011 and now the smart TV is becoming more popular, according to a published article that in 2016, 21% of internet connections being activated through the television.
So, why do so many people, now, depend on the internet as their main form of communication?
Well for businesses this is really the best platform they can use for marketing and having their product seen, they even receive some free marketing on social websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and all due to one single member of these social media sites "liking" and "sharing" their products / item / page. This could reach millions of potential customers worldwide.
A really good / cheap way of gaining so much free advertising / marketing. See the Social Capital Blog for further explanation;

For individuals it is mostly used to keep up with family and friends globally, sharing of photographs and social interaction without actually leaving the house! Households in general use the internet for buying and selling of items, from a small item, like a pillow, to a full monthly shop, holiday, car and even a house! Most also use online sources for paying for these items, online banking, the easiest way to pay and be paid.
This is where businesses come into it, possibly the largest portion of internet users have bought at least one item from an online seller, whether it be eBay or Amazon all the way up to Estate Agents.
Social Media has escalated so much in the past 20/25 years, from the old dial up modem to the new fast fibre optic broadband,
It is revolutionising people skills as well as the true meaning of social INTERACTION so much so that some users are classed as Nomophobic if they are without their mobile phones, the gadget that houses their social media and internet connection.
Not all Social Media is a negative, positive uses for businesses is that they can interact in real time with other partners based in different towns and countries.
65% of Health Care Professionals (HCPs) use social media for professional reasons, although Pharmacists prefer to refrain from using it.
All of these writings and facts can be found at: Social Media Usage from the Office for National Statistics if you wish to read more?
Information tells us about some of the main uses of social media but couldn't usage of social media by groups/businesses be also used for communicating with their customers to help see if there are any problems that may need to be addressed from their feedback. Brilliant blog entry as you also have statistics detailing usage of social media.
ReplyDeleteGood point Aaron.
DeleteI understand a lot of businesses and groups do use social media to communicate with their customers, which is a good thing, if the customer is a relative distance from where the business or group are based, but, being of a more advanced age, I prefer to have someone I can speak to face to face rather than via an email or a social media platform. To be honest, is the person doing the corresponding with the client who they say they are? Not that it isn't a member of the business or group but, it may not be the member who is signed on, the one you WANT to speak to? A number of managers / representatives allow other staff or group members passwords to the business or groups social media platforms, as with people on a "friends" list, I have been with friends or family and they have received a correspondence from one of their friends via social media and they have asked me to "get that please, I'm doing such and such" because they are busy. Which is why, even though it is progression towards the future, I personally still like to speak face to face with people.
Social media in businesses and groups may be good for progression but has, and continues to, cost people their jobs, especially from the older generation, like myself. Some of these older generation have helped to develop and build these businesses or groups for a number of years to make them what they are today. So, as good as Social Media may be for the future, for some, like me, it doesn't do the job as well as "socialising."

DeleteGood post, lots on informative reading but I personally think this could have been laid out better as some of the pictures have caused the writing to move making it a bit awkward to read but still a lot of good detail and facts found through your research, overall a very good post.
ReplyDeleteGreat comment Connor. I noticed that too after I had posted it, needless to say it looked fine when I was writing it but has obviously wavered a bit during publication, sorry about that and I hope it did not impact on your reading of the blog too much.
