The use made of personal data by social media enterprises.
It is said that social media collect all the information about their customers and they then sell it on to other companies so that they can see what their potential customers do online. Entities such as airlines, politicians, and even non-profits use the social media to find out information on their customers and then they come up with ideas on how to target them.
Social media such as Instagram and Facebook also have the right to take any information off of your page. It states in the terms and conditions that either of these websites have the right to use your personal information but 9/10 people do not read these terms and conditions and click "I Accept" anyway therefore don't know the dangers of them using these social media websites. This can include things such as photos, videos, updates, etc and they can use them for themselves or again sell them onto other companies to use. Instagram for example have the right to use users photos for advertising their social media website and then they could sell it onto another social media website such as Twitter and then they could do the same for advertising purposes.
MP's have stated that social media networks should cut down the information in the terms and conditions so that people can fully understand the effects of social media and what agreements they are getting themselves into. This meaning that instead of a 32 page terms and conditions then it might only be 4 or 5 pages that you have to read through to understand what Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc expects of you and what you should expect from them.
In my opinion I believe that the terms and conditions are written in a way that a lot of people do not understand and therefore there should be a law that states that terms and conditions should be simplified for understanding reasons. I also think that it is unacceptable that these social media websites think its acceptable to use other peoples personal information for their own personal use as it isn't their property and if they were in our shoes then they would realise that it isn't right.

Really hard hitting article, makes you realise just how much information we tend to give away on our social media profiles without even thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteI personally disagree with your opinion on companies using this information, with more and more people joining social media businesses surely must be finding it hard to keep up with less people actually physically coming to their branches, it's the only way they can keep going in my opinion.
i agree with the fact that terms and conditions should be clearer when it comes to our data and how it is used but i agree with connor in the fact that if they didn't do this then businesses might loose money and dissolve. good blog though and opens your eyes.
ReplyDeleteGood and interesting article which highlights how personal we are being online, the first article is quite scary as it shows how worrying the affects of posting so much online is, even MP's are panicking. Good read.
